NATIONAL SCHOOLS FILM WEEK 15 - 19 October 2007
The Rio Cinema will again be participating in National Schools Film Week. National Schools Film Week is the biggest event of its kind in Europe and last year took more than a quarter of a million children to see 1,500 films in over 500 locations throughout the UK! Now in its 12th year, it promises to be bigger than ever!
The Rio is delighted to be able to present four free screenings:
For Primary Schools:
Monday 15 Oct 10am
CHARLOTTE'S WEB (U)
An adaptation of the much loved classic children's story about the friendship between a farmyard pig and a lovable spider. Wilbur the pig is the runt of the litter, and the farmer wants to get rid of him. But farmer's daughter Fern saves his life, keeping him like a puppy until he gets too big to handle. Wilbur's life is in danger again - until he meets Charlotte, a friendly and intelligent spider who has a plan to save him in a very unusual way. A delightful family film.
Tuesday 16 Oct 10am
KIRIKOU & THE SORCERESS (U)
Based on a West African folktale, KIRIKOU tells the story of a young child born into an African village. A sorceress called Karaba has cast a terrible spell: the spring has dried up, and the men of the village have disappeared. Kirikou wants to rid the village of Karaba's curse and understand the cause of her wickedness. A brilliant, beautifully made animation which looks at storytelling, myths and other cultures. With introduction and post film question and answer session.
For Secondary Schools:
Wed 17 Oct 10am
GOODBYE BAFANA (15) With post-film discussion from Diran Adebayo.
The true story of a white South African racist whose life was profoundly altered by the black prisoner he guarded for twenty years. The prisoner's name was Nelson Mandela.
Fri 19 Oct 10am
AMAZING GRACE (PG) With introduction and post-film discussion (speaker TBC).
The inspiring story of William Wilberforce, one of the key British figures to bring about the bill that abolished the transatlantic slave trade 200 years ago.
