THE 39 STEPS• Tue 10 Jun 1.00

THE 39 STEPS (U)

(UK 1935) dir. Alfred Hitchcock 86m. Digital.
Robert Donat, Madeleine Carroll, Lucie Mannheim, Godfrey Tearle.

It's classic Hitchcock all the way in this adaptation of John Buchan's Boys Own Adventure. Spies, English eccentrics and a man with a missing finger punctuate a thrilling chase, in which our hero is both the pursuer and the pursued, across the Scottish moorlands. A perverse romantic interlude involves a blonde heroine and a pair of handcuffs. MacGuffins were never more delightful.

MONGOL• Thur 12 Jun 12.30

MONGOL (15)

(Germany/Kazakhstan/Russia/Mongolia 2007) dir. Sergei Bodrov 125m. Subtitles. Digital.
Tadanobu Asano, Honglei Sun, Khulan Chuluun, Amadu Mamadakov, Ba Sen, Bu Ren.

MONGOL is epic movie making at its most spectacular and breathtaking. Filmed entirely in Mongolia and Kazakhstan, it's the story of Genghis Khan, the slave who united his people and went on to conquer half the Medieval world. Director Sergei Bodrov captures a world in which nomadic life is harsh, and the climate and terrain of Central Asia even harsher. This is an insightful and rounded portrait of the legendary ruler, but equally prominent is the character of Borte, Genghis Khan's strong, resourceful first wife and his lifelong adviser. The mix of folklore and fact is hauntingly complemented by the music of Mongolian band Altan Urgan.

MY BROTHER IS A ONLY CHILD (Mio Fratello è Figlio Unico)• Tue 17 Jun 1.00

MY BROTHER IS A ONLY CHILD (Mio Fratello è Figlio Unico) (12A)

(Italy/France 2007) dir. Daniele Luchetti 104m. Subtitles.
Elio Germano, Riccardo Scamarcio, Diane Fleri, Angela Finocchiaro, Massimo Popolizio.

Two working-class brothers grow up in the provincial town of Latina in the 1960s and are torn apart by ideological conflict in the 1970s, much like Italy itself. Based on the bestselling novel by Antonio Pennacchi, and scripted by the writers of the epic THE BEST OF YOUTH, this is a likable, bitter-sweet tragi-comedy which perfectly captures the times, the places and the characters.

IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS• Thur 19 Jun 11.45am

IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS (15)

(US 2007) dir. Alex Holridge 100m. Digital.
Scoot McNairy, Sara Simmonds, Brian McGuire, Kathleen Luong, Twink Caplan.

New Year's Eve. Wilson (Scoot McNairy) has just endured the worst year of his life and is determined to pass on the festivities and be home alone. But he is persuaded to post an ad for a last minute companion on an internet dating site, and consequently meets Vivian (Sara Simmonds), a headstrong and uncompromising woman determined not to be on her own at the stroke of midnight. Strikingly filmed in black-and-white and refreshingly using little-seen L.A. locations, IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS is Woody Allen's MANHATTAN revisited for a new millenium. It's also a little gem with a huge heart and one of the best movies of the year.

THE EDGE OF LOVE• Tue 24 Jun 12.45

THE EDGE OF LOVE (15)

(UK 2008) dir. John Maybury 111m. Digital
Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy, Matthew Rhys.

The story of the other Dylan, the equally legendary Dylan Thomas, Welsh poet, author of ‘Under Milk Wood’ and dedicated alcoholic, told through his affairs with two feisty, free-spirited women. When Thomas (Matthew Rhys) meets his childhood sweetheart Vera (Keira Knightley) during World War Two old feelings reappear. But Thomas is now married to the equally wild Caitlin (Sienna Miller). Despite the unusual circumstances, the two women forge an unlikely bond, and a friendship that survives the conflict and turmoil of their love for one man. Moving from blitz-ridden London to the Welsh countryside, this poignant and touching story is as outstandingly original as director John Maybury's LOVE IS THE DEVIL, the story of another twisted artistic genius, the painter Francis Bacon.

SON OF RAMBOW (12A)

(France/UK/Germany 2007) dir. Garth Jennings 96m.
Bill Milner, Will Poulter, Jules Sitruk, Jessica Hynes.

A delightfully quirky comedy about friendship, faith and the bizarre business of growing up in the 1980s. Will is the unhappy eldest son in a deeply religious, fatherless family. Forbidden from watching television, new worlds open when he sees a RAMBO video supplied by school terror Lee. So begins the boys' secret filmmaking life, until the arrival of a French exchange student pushes their unique friendship and precious film to breaking point.

FEMALE AGENTS (Les Femmes de l'ombre)• Thur 3 Jul 12.30

FEMALE AGENTS (Les Femmes de l’ombre) (15)

(France 2008) dir. Jean-Paul Salomé 117m. Subtitles. Digital.
Sophie Marceau, Julie Depardieu, Marie Gillain, Déborah François, Moritz Bleibtreu.

More evocatively known in France as LES FEMMES DE L'OMBRE, this is a gripping, star-studded tribute to a group of unsung heroes of World War Two. On the brink of D-Day 1944 Louise (Sophie Marceau) is instructed to round up a team who will be parachuted into France to rescue a captured British agent. Tough prostitute Jeanna (Julie Depardieu), explosives expert Gaelle (Déborah François) and showgirl Suzy (Marie Gillain) are then given the mission to kill Karl Heindrich (Moritz Bleibtreu), head of German military intelligence, who is thought to know the location of the pending Allied landings. Director Jean-Paul Salomé keeps the action and suspense going at breakneck speed but still delivers believable characters and situations with a conviction that is irresistibly entertaining.

THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRLTHE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL (12A)

(UK/US 2008) dir. Justin Chadwick 115m.
Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Eric Bana, David Morrissey, Jim Sturgess, Mark Rylance, Kristin Scott Thomas, Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ana Torrent, Oliver Coleman, Juno Temple.

The big screen adaptation of Phillipa Gregory's bestselling novel of romance and intrigue. Portman and Johansson are perfect as Anne and Mary Boleyn, sisters driven apart by their pursuit of handsome King Henry VIII. It's certainly more hysterical drama than historical drama, but this is entertainment not education. And there's no denying that the costumes and sets are stunning.

LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA• Thur 10 Jul 12.15

LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA (15)

Javier Bardem, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Benjamin Bratt, Unax Ugalde, John Leguizamo, Fernanda Montenegro, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Ana Claudia Talancón, Laura Harring, Hector Elizondo, Liev Schreiber, Marcela Mar.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel adapted by Ronald Harwood as an epic love story set against a breathtaking South American backdrop at the turn of the century. When teenage Florentino Ariza sees Fermina Daza for the first time a spark of youthful infatuation ignites a romance that will span a crazy, rollercoasting and always unpredictable lifetime. Javier Bardem and Giovanna Mezzogiorno age magnificently and the Shakira infused soundtrack is a bonus.

(France/Italy 2007) dir. Catherine Breillat 104m. Subtitles.
Asia Argento, Fu'ad Ait Aattou, Roxane Mesquida, Claude Sarraute, Yolande Moreau, Michael Lonsdale, Anne Parillaud.

A tale of amour fou and intrigue set in the aristocratic world of Paris in 1835. Director Catherine Breillat's mix of the erotic and the cerebral captures a world of courtliness and cruelty in a movie that is as elegantly stylish as it is passionately intelligent. Asia Argento is perfectly cast as the brazen mistress with an outrageous wardrobe to match.
